چکیده

Hazelnuts with damaged or cracked shells are more prone to infection with aflatoxin producing molds (Aspergillus Flavus). These molds can cause cancer. In this study, we introduce a new approach that separates damaged/cracked hazelnut kernels from good ones by using time-frequency features obtained from impact acoustic signals in an offline step. The proposed technique requires no prior knowledge of the relevant time and frequency locations. It adaptively segments impact signals from a training data set in time using local cosine packet analysis and a Kullback-Leibler criterion to assess the discrimination power of different segmentations. In each resulting time segment, the signal is further decomposed into sub-bands using an undecimated wavelet transform. The most discriminative sub-bands are selected according to the Euclidean distance between the cumulative probability distributions of the corresponding sub band coefficients. The most discriminative sub bands are fed into a linear discriminant analysis classifier. In the online classification step, the algorithm simply computes the learned features from the observed signal and feeds them to the LDA classifier. This allows the system to process 71 nuts/sec. The algorithm achieved a classification accuracy of 96.7% with the 24 most discriminative features, a higher rate than those provided with prior methods.

The Aspergillus flavus Susceptibility of Hazelnut Varieties (Corylus avellana L.) in Laboratory Conditions

Iran has suitable conditions for cultivating high-quality varieties of hazelnuts (Corylus avellana L.). Most of hazelnut orchards in Iran have been established by planting native genotypes. Aspergillus flavus Link. (AF) is a filamentous fungus affecting hazelnut kernels in orchards and during storage conditions. The most widely explored strategy for reducing aflatoxin contamin...

Study of Pollen Effects on some Quantitative Characteristics of Hazelnut Cultivars (Corylus avellana) in East of Guilan

Pollination is very important for achieving an economical production in hazelnuts. This study was conducted as a factorial randomized complete block design with three replications. In this study, the effects of three pollinizers (Pashmineh, Gercheh and Shastak) on nut and kernel characteristics of some hazelnut cultivars (Rounde, Fertilede coutard and Gerdeshkvarat) were investigated. Feasibility of impact-acoustic emissions for detection of damaged wheat kernels

A non-destructive, real time device was developed to detect insect damage, sprout damage, and scab damage in kernels of wheat. Kernels are impacted onto a steel plate and the resulting acoustic signal analyzed to detect damage. The acoustic signal was processed using four different methods: modeling of the signal in the time-domain, computing time-domain signal variances and maximums in short-t...
